I wasn't suggesting the dance commonly known as "belly dance" should be renamed - but rather this mish-mash in the competition was not "belly dance". Sounds like the organizers had no idea of what belly dance actually is but rather used it as a loose term to cover anything with undulations or bare bellies or circles or isolations.

Also sounds like they gave other dance forms far more respect in requiring "one legible additional dance form" - great - pity they didn't require the same standard for teh belly dance.

"Belly Dancing" is an art that originated in the Middle Eastern countries from as far back as the Bibical days. "Belly Dance " I feel should not have another term. It has the movement of the cute, not so little belly. It is all apart of the dance and mostly from the belly and waist movements. So should we name it The Belly /Waist Movement Dance? Not.... a chance. Hey, Just like the "Hula Dance" in Hawaii the viewer is suppose to keep the eyes on the hands that tell the story while she is doing the Hula. Tell that to a man. :) Got - Cha.....

What confuses is me is why this comes under "belly dance" at all. Please use another term! "Belly dance" is much, much more than a dance that "uses lots of undulations". I know this was the definition used by the author - not the organizers - but by looking at what was produced I'd say they shared a poor understanding of "belly dance". Would someone organize a flamenco competition as anything with lots of stomping? or ballet anything with lots of dancing on toes?

thanks barbara for your comments. however...i didn't write this article. and, while i do understand what it's like to have your work rejected by a publication - my work wasn't rejected by THIS publication, it was, in fact, requested.
