As someone who regularly performs both gothic belly dance and Egyptian-style raqs sharqi, I really applaud Laura Rose for writing this article. As artists who are also entertainers, we need to know our audience to be sure they are entertained by our artistry! Sometimes challenging your audience is acceptable or downright preferable, but sometimes it isn’t what an audience wants or can cope with, and we dancers need to be sensitive to the difference.
