It's indeed a small world! Last week after returning from Cairo where I taught finger cymbals at Ahlan Wa Sahlan Festival I found myself reading Amina's excellent article about her meeting on several occasions when she was in Cairo and eventually taking drum lessons from Faruk Sarsa . At the festival, I requested to have a drummer for my cymbal class to demonstrate rhythms and help students practice playing with a live drummer. The woman in charge of class amentities went off and came back with a friendly young man who would be my drummer and introduced him to me as Faruk. He and I talked about what I needed for my class and then he asked where I was from. I told him "near San Francisco" and he asked me if I knew Amina and Debbie. I said that of course I know them, they're my friends! Then he told me that he knew both of them and that they'd taken lessons from him. Imagine my surprise at meeting him, not to mention having him as my drummer for my class!

Faruk was wonderfully patient and helpful as my class drummer. A few days later I had the opportunity to observe a drum lesson he taught to a friend from New York City at his and his wife's very nice studio in Mohandiseen (a section of Cairo). His clarityand patience along with his ability to fit the pace of the class to his new student's current level of knowledge and to push her gently toward the next level assured his high position on my list of recommended teachers in Cairo.
