Barbara — I wrote it, from answers to questions I posed to the three panelists (myself included). Since this was more or less a press release, I didn’t want a byline. Also because if I signed it I couldn’t really talk about myself in the third person and if I used first person it might seem to privilege my ideas over others’. It was indeed a great panel and a topic that deserves a lot more consideration. My paper is up on GS and so is the first part of Shema’s.

Really interesting post, I do believe that belly dancing is an expression of feminism – I love it!

Oh Lord!
When are people in our dance community going to learn that if we
want respect, we have to quit using the improper, misleading, buffoonish term “belly dance” , slapped on us by a huckster in 1893?
There are those who argue that we can change people’s minds and
educate them while still using the term. Is has been 35+ years since
the first time the dance hit the American mainstream and it ain’t happened yet!
Better to use the term “oriental dance” and then educate the average geographically-challenged American that “oriental” doesn’t always mean “Asian, Far-Eastern. Do ourselves a favor and let them learn something too!

Great article but no credits as to who wrote it. Someone did a great job at the intro, and should be credited. This sounds like an absolutely _great_ seminar! Wonderful diversity in points of view. I only regret that I will not be there, but please let us know more!
