Desert Dance Festival 1999 Canceled
Dear Friends of DDF,
It is with great sadness that we must inform the community that due to unforeseen circumstances, we have been forced
to cancel DDF for this year only. We encountered a situation that called for some deep thought on our part and
serious considerations for our DDF patrons.
We had made arrangements to hold our 1999 festival in the Santa Clara Convention Center. We would have been occupying
a fourth of the available room space for our vendors and a second stage; our neighbors, a stamp collectors show,
had the other fourth of the room, and a religious group had reserved the remaining half of the room space.
Unfortunately, the religious group is Islamic and all 1500 of them would be in prayer the entire weekend. We did
"challenge" them for their space (meaning we made a bid to rent their half of the room instead of our
quarter space). Unfortunately, they came through with their deposit, which left us devastated.
As you may or may not know, some Islamic are fundamentalist groups, and to be exposed to their disparagement can
be quite unpleasant. We didn't want our friends and colleagues to suffer any insults or be exposed to any disrespect
or condemnation during the festival, nor did we want the integrity of DDF to be compromised.
However, to every negative side there is a positive one. We are continuing our quest for the perfect location
for DDF 2000. We will start the new millennium with a bigger and better festival. We have so many new ideas and
we're very excited to be able to put them in motion.
On a personal note, Sean and I will miss seeing all of you. You have been our greatest source of inspiration in
keeping the festival (and all of the DDF committee) going and we hope the feeling has been mutual
