The Sheltering Sky Today!
"The Sheltering Sky". This
novel was made into an astonishing adventure and romance movie which was actually filmed in Morocco. The photography
of the captivating film was expansive and, I feel did justice to the complex and painful story portrayed. The Modern
Library named "The Sheltering Sky" as one of the best one hundred novels of the 20th century written
in English!
Paul Bowles was born in New York City on December 30, 1910. However, he settled into life as an expatriate in Tangiers,
Morocco around 1947. Tangiers is a colorful, busy port city in which on a clear day one can see the Rock of Gibraltar
and the southern coast of Spain. (Many dancers who visit Tangiers also take the one-hour ferry across the Straight
of Gibraltar, visit Spain and see the Flamenco dancing there.) The earliest part of Mr. Bowles' career was in music
and he was, at an early age, an impressive composer who studied under Aaron Copland.
However, Mr. Bowels' greater fame was gained as a novelist and was reputed to have been a guide, almost father
figure, to several writers who later also became famous during the "beatnik" era. Allen Ginsburg and
the renowned William Burroughs were among them. Other novels also set in the beauty and expanse of Morocco are:
"The Spider's House" and
"Let It Come Down."
Paul Bowles was 88 years of age.
