Enhancing Belly Dancing with Reiki by Lori Marie McDonald As a certified Reiki Master Teacher, and Belly Dancer, I wanted to combine my two passions, the ancient dance art that honors women as the creator of life, with the ancient healing art. My experience has shown that Reiki enhances my belly dancing performance skills. Reiki helps to protect me from picking up negative energies or vibrations from the people I work with or audience members I perform for. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that works on all levels, including the body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, joy, love, upliftment, beauty, balance and harmony for the both the practitioner and the audience. Not to mention helping to prevent stage fright. The main focus of Reiki is to help others. While I belly dance I visualize the sacred healing symbol to access the Universal Life Force Healing Energy. The sacred Reiki symbols are revealed to the second degree Reiki practitioner who has been empowered by attunements, and must be kept confidential. Once a person has been opened up to becoming a "channel" for Reiki, concentrated Life Energy will flow through the hands. Reiki is holistic in effect. What is Reiki? Reiki was recovered by the Japanese as a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words from the Japanese Kanji and means "Spiritually guided life force energy." "Rei" - which means Universal-present everywhere. "The Higher Power" "Ki" - Which is the life force"Life Force Energy" and is the same as "Chi" in Chinese, "Prana" in Sanskrit, "Holy Ghost" of the Christians, "Mana" in Hawaiian and "Ka" of the Egyptians. "Ki" is used by martial artist in their physical training and mental development, Shamans of all cultures access this Ki energy for divination, psychic awareness, and healing. Discovering the History of Reiki. Throughout the history of mankind healing methods have existed. The knowledge of Reiki would have remained lost forever had not Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered the key, which led to the recovery of a thousand-year-old tradition of healing in 2,500-year-old Sanskrit Sutras. At the end of the 19th century, Dr. Mikao Usui was responsible for its revival. The story of Dr. Usui's search for this secret knowledge has been told by Grand Master Hawayo Takata(1900-1980) along the following lines. While in Japan, Dr Usui, a doctor of Theology discovered some Sanskrit formulas and symbols in old Bhuddist Sutras about hands-on-healing methods. After a 21 day fast and meditation on Mt. Kurama he was enlightened to the Usui System of Reiki healing. He opened a clinic and gave treatments to countless patients. Dr Usui spent the rest of his life teaching Reiki.
