Gilded Serpent presents a Gig Bag check with Pepper
Alexandria!
What does a dancer need to carry in her gig bag? Pepper’s bag
may contain a few unusual items. Also included are clips
of Pepper dancing solo and with her Ghawazee troupe at
her festival called Carnival of Stars. Troupe members included- Heather,
Monifa, Kathy, Alyson, Birute and
Sonya. I’ll add her name here when I found
out what it is!

Scimitar performed
in the duos/trios category. The stage lights were
not turned on for the first significant length of
their show. They continued to perform in the dark
allowing us only glimpses of what looked like could
have been a very dramatic start. When the lights
were finally turned on randomly in the middle of
a song they continued their creative and daring choreography.
Why were they not given
a chance to begin again? When asked about it later,
Leea, the event producer, was unaware that their
had been a problem. Apparently the lighting instructions
were misunderstood. UPDATE: Sunday- Leea researched
the problem and found that the contestants had indeed
requested that the lights not be turned on until
41 seconds into their show to highlight the florescent
details of their costuming. When they we actually
turned on is unverified but Leea assured GS that
lighting requests are programmed into the theater's
controls by a lighting technician.

"Egypt"
held March 5-8, 2009
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Photos submitted by Yasmina
Ramzy, producer of event
Testimonial by Vian
I had the pleasure of attending Arabesque Dance
Company’s production of "Egypt" and found
myself immersed in a world of color, sensuality and passion.
From the powerfully scored pieces of the Arabesque
Orchestra and Sulieman Warwar,
to the mesmerizing dancers, the mythical world of ancient tales
come to light. And what a bright light that shone at the Fleck
Dance Theatre that night !
From the moment the curtain rose, I was riveted to my seat ,
immersed in the powerful music and artistic grace of such a production.
My personal favorite, Kariat El Fingan, a truly mesmerizing
piece that fused modern dance with belly dance in an emotional
awaking that leaves you wanting for more.
Powerful dance pieces performed by Arabesque Dance company,
confirm Ramzy’s effort at elevating belly dance into a higher
level of art. Toronto is indeed fortunate to have Arabesque Dance
Company and Yasmina Ramzy as a cultural pillar in the community.
As the show came to a close I found myself longing for more,
not ready for it to end. I was inspired , so much so that I came
back the next night for a repeat performance. I am looking forward
to the next production with eager anticipation.

H1N1 Flu Epidemic Affects Dance Classes in
Mexico
Martha- "Here are the pictures of today's class on May
7, 2009 at the Danceme Academy in Mexicali,
Baja, California. Many families are still staying home and not attending
school or after school activities yet. It all started with a patient
in San Diego, California. For the past 2 weeks our lives are on pause.
None of my students or family members are sick but they are afraid.
Up to today 18 in my city have gotten sick and 90 patients are a
waiting their lab results. Another meaning to Never stop dancing!

A few students are coming to the adult class to practice
and because they miss dancing.
The Belly Racks Divine competition in Tijiuana was postponed
from May to August .

A few came for the preteen class- ages 8-11

Gilded Serpent Video Report from By Dancers For Dancers 2009
Held March 1, 2009 in Berkeley California
Cheeky Girls Productions has presented this
show at least a couple of years in a row now. This theater event
is primarily a DVD shoot but presenting it as a show helps defray
the costs and give the dancers real faces to perform to. Michelle
Joyce, the producer, provides this opportunity to fellow
professional dancers in the community as a cooperative effort. The
dancers are each involved in the editing process and they also receive
a certain amount of DVDs in exchange for their performance.

“Sharif” Ahmad
El-Mouzayen:
In Memoriam
by Najia Marlyz
Born in 1936 in the seacoast city of Acre, an ancient
walled city that was, at that time, part of the territory of Palestine,
musician and singer Ahmad El-Mouzayen died in a Berlin
hospice on Thursday, March 5, 2009, surrounded by family members.
In 1948, Ahmad relocated with his family to Beirut,
Lebanon. Ahmad attended Cairo University, in Egypt, during the
early ‘70s where he studied classical western music. Ahmad
was known during his music career as “Ahmad Sharif” and
was familiar to dancers and fellow musicians simply as “Sharif”. He
began his music career composing Palestinian nationalist music and
taught music under the sponsorship of the United Nations.
Sharif immigrated to the United States in 1976, and
though he played the Oud and sang for many occasions throughout the
U.S., he was best known in California primarily in the San Francisco
Bay Area, where he performed as part of the band at the
Casbah on Broadway, North Beach, in the Cabaret
owned by musician/restaurateur, Fadil
Shahin. Ahmad also lived and performed various
time in Denver, Colorado as well as Orlando, Florida and Portland,
Oregon. He married his first wife, Sandra, in the
U.S. 1983 and had a son, Sharif, now a member of
the U.S. Marine Corps, and a daughter, Summer Loomis,
now living in Georgia with her husband and three daughters.
Ahmad spent the last years of life teaching music
and playing the Oud in Berlin, Germany, where he raised Summer and
Sharif. While in Berlin, he remarried and had two more daughters, Sarah and Miriam,
who are living in Germany with their mother, Andrea.
Also surviving Ahmad is his youngest brother, Mohamad,(United
States) as well as brothers Akram and Soheir (Denmark) Mahmoud,
(Germany) and his two sisters, Nada, and Hannan (Germany). |

Joyce. Jennifer describes strategy differences for a

Mireya Yamilit
Winner of the Taxsim Division at the Belly Dancer of the
Universe Competition 2009
Mireya is from Puerto Rico and has a school in
San Juan called Magic Steps Belly Dance Studio.
She talks with us after winning trophies in the taxsim division from
the judges panel, the People’s Choice and for congeniality.
She is with her proud mother, her students and friends. Miles Copeland
of BDSS listens and then interjects from the background. A taxsim
is an improvised musical solo, but in this instance it refers to the
part of a dancers show that is slower, more moody, mysterious, and
could include a prop.

This is beautiful baby Sofie, daughter of belly dancer Amira of
Las Vegas. Sofie is in her first belly dance costume (made
by Amy/Amaya), she is 5 months old in this picture. The very first
thing Amira bought for her baby were the tiny Saroyan zills. That
was more important than diapers! Another thing that Amira gave birth
to is her brand new 3.5 hour long DVD “Belly Dance and Yoga
for pregnancy”. “Producing and birthing this DVD was a
lot more work than being pregnant” says Amira. For more info
